Last week I missed getting this post out. Whatever conspired to keep me from my computer is irrelevant. The fact is, i didn’t get it done and that’s on me.
In my family are many veterans. All served, whether deployed or not. I have known WWII, Korean war, Vietnam conflict and Gulf war Veterans. I understand that those who served in Vietnam didn’t view it as a conflict. It was a war, even if war was never officially declared.
In “A Penny for your Thoughts” I give tribute to a WWII vet who served in Europe. I met this vibrant 96 year old while I was writing the book. Sadly he passed away shortly after our meeting. The one story he told me is in the chapter “Letters from the Front.”
My good friend, whom I knew for more than twenty years, was a purple heart recipient in the Korean war. I also have friends that served in Vietnam who won’t, to this day, talk about any of it. Another friend was killed on his third deployment to Iraq. Two of my children currently serve.
I honor every one of these men and women. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for someone else.(paraphrased) To those who have passed, I miss you. To those who are still with us, I salute you. To my children, I love you very much. To all Veterans, thank you.
